I’d always seen school as something of a chore, but now that it had become my only opportunity to see Lili and talk about everything that was going on, it was the highlight of my life.

In the absence of being able to do anything ourselves, Lili and I became obsessed with trying to understand what was going on in the wider world. Towards the end of June there was an image all over West German TV of a Hungarian official and an Austrian official cutting the border fence between the two countries. Lili had already told me that they were taking down the borders there, so I asked her why it was suddenly in the news.

‘It’s symbolic,’ she said, looking serious. ‘That’s what my dad says. They don’t just want to take down the border, they want everyone to know they’re doing it, especially you East Germans. Half of you come to Hungary for your summer holiday, and with the border gone they’re expecting a lot of people will just keep going west and never return to East Germany.’

‘You mean they’re going to escape? Go to the West?’ I asked, looking around. I knew that loads of people from school went to Hungary on their holidays over the summer. ‘Surely they won’t let them do that.’

‘What can they do about it? Stop people going on holiday? I mean, maybe they should, because I bet then there’d be riots.’
